Acupuncture and Infertility Infertility affects approximately 15-20% of couples during the so-called "childbearing years". It is diagnosed when a couple is unable to conceive a child after a period of six to twelve months of regular sexual intercourse (without birth control). Causes of Infertility Conditions causing infertility in women include PMS, endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, immune system irregularities, and infertility related to hormonal circumstances. Male infertility may be caused by low sperm count, sperm immobility or blocked passageways. Fevers, infections, disease and congenital abnormalities can also contribute to infertility in men. Poor health, obesity, bad eating habits, excessive stress, and excessive smoking or alcohol consumption are also factors in both male and female infertility. Acupuncture and Infertility Infertility can be one of the most harrowing experiences for a couple, and sometimes when all hope has been lost the idea of another let down is all too much. In recent years, however the number of couples seeking alternative methods of fertility treatment has been on the rise. Acupuncture is a safe alternative for many types of ailments as it promotes the smooth circulation of energy or qi in the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the kidney controls the formation and release of the egg from the ovaries, thus weak kidney qi, yin or yang may result in infertility. In many cases, unexplained fertility is caused by liver qi stagnation that affects blood circulation in the pelvic cavity. A person with qi congestion may be working late hours and taking birth control pills. This liver imbalance can be cured in nine months or more with acupuncture at a specific time in the menstrual cycle in combination with an herbal formula. This is not a simple process, as it takes time to release stress, trauma and toxins in the system. Length of Treatment Acupuncture treats the whole person as part of an effort to restore balance within the individual. With infertility, acupuncture aims to regulate and rebalance the reproductive system. The length of treatment depends entirely on the individual and the state of their mental and physical health. For example a 28 year old woman who has taken birth control pills for an extended period of time and has a history of drug and alcohol abuse will have a longer treatment period than a 30 year old woman who has a clean bill of health. The length and success of the treatment is not only dependent on the nature of the problem, but also on how long the individual has been infertile for. It is vital for the couple to remain committed to the treatment. Timing and consistency can be everything. For a man with a low sperm count or sperm mobility problem, the success of the treatment relies on a consistent approach as results will only show after a three to four month period of regular sessions. For the woman, timing and consistency is also important during each week of the cycle, as specific hormonal adjustments have to be made. To fully regulate the cycle, it takes a minimum of three consecutive cycles (12 treatments). Missing one week of treatment will completely alter its entire result. It is also essential for both the man and the woman to maintain a regular and healthy diet throughout the treatment period. Selecting the Acupuncturist As infertility is a complex syndrome, it is important to select a qualified acupuncturist specializing in infertility. While undergoing treatment, it is important for the patient and practitioner to communicate with each other. If the patient is taking any herbs or vitamins or combining acupuncture with other reproductive techniques, it is important to inform the acupuncturist. Acupuncture can be used with or without the integration of Western medical technology. However, it appears that there is a higher success rate when acupuncture and herbs are used in combination with modern procedures. |
