How to treat cancers with traditional Chinese medicine
How to treat cancers with traditional Chinese medicine It was reported on a Chinese News Paper that cattle fodders was polluted by PCBs in Belgium recently, and remedial action is being taken. PCBs is one kind of industrial chemicals mainly used for generator (dynamo) and insulation solution and is difficult to be decomposed. If a lot of PCBs is taken into the body, it will reduce the immunocompetence and induce cancer formation. Similar cases of PCBs pollution were often reported elsewhere. With the increasing threat of cancers from the polluted environment, how could they be treated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)? According the body's condition and the status of cancer development, TCM treats cancer through two ways. One is to kill cancer cells and remove the tumor; this is called "elimination of the evil". Another is to suppress cancer growth by strengthening the anti-tumor activity and immunity of the body; this is called "support of the healthy energy". The former is the means and the latter is the fundamental, both are basic measures for the treatment of cancers. According to the theory of TCM, the development of cancer can be due to external and/or internal factors. External factors include the pollutions from air, food and radiation. The external factors act on the body, leading to various pathogenic conditions such as stagnation of the Qi, blood stasis, stagnation of the phlegm and the presence of evil-toxin etc. The Qi (Zhen-Qi) deficiency caused by congenital or acquired insufficiency of the body constitutes the internal factor, which can result in the accumulation of evil-toxin and hence the formation of tumor. During the course of cancer development, the conflict between the Zhen-Qi and evil starts from the beginning and lasts till the end. Based on the body's condition and the progression of tumor growth, the treatment for tumor is divided into three phases in TCM. In the early phase when the tumor has not spread yet, the treatment is focused on dispelling the evil and toxin. In the middle phase when the tumor begins to grow, the confrontation between the Z hen-Qi and evil continues, treatment methods involving both aggressive and supplementing (Pu) measures should be adopted. In the late phase when the cancer cells have already spread out, treatment should be focused on Pu in order to strengthen the body condition and relieve the symptoms as well as prolong the lifespan. Treatment methods, regardless of aggressive or Pu in nature, should be adopted with reference to the differentiation of signs and symptoms in the context of Yin-Yang, Qi-blood, Viscerae and Organs and the nature of pathogenic factors. |
